Across the Universe

One of my favorite things to do is to have movie night with my hubby and Charli. We do it on a regular basis and it's something we all look forward to. We make it a real event at our house, with the pillows and blankets, the pop corn, you know, the works.
This week we saw the most unique and mind boggling movie we have seen in a long time so I thought it was worth mentioning here. The movie is called Across the Universe. It starts out a little slow. In fact, we almost gave up on it, but then it slowly builds and pulls you in. I think if you lived through the excitement, the turmoil, and the tragedy of the sixites, and you have any knowledge of the beatles, you could certainly relate to this movie. It's a musical. It's a love story. It takes place in the sixties and is based on the producers interpretation of the beatles music. It is very artistic, well done, and choreographed exceptionally well. But it's even more than that......You have to be able to catch all the subtleties to relate to and understand the premise of the movie. It's almost as if you are playing some sort of beatle mania game, where there is name dropping of titles, not so famous cover tunes, and lyrics. There are also cameo appearences of people like Joe Cocker and Bono. On the surface it is a love story with some Beatles trivia thrown in, but then it even goes much deeper than that......It takes you back to the pandemonium of the sixties, the loss of inocence, the violence, the peace movement, the protests, the student strikes, the Vietnam war, the drug culture, the riots, and the totally senseless murder of Martin Luther King.......... Towards the end of the movie, you hear the lyrics sung, "Nothins gonna change my world" but everything did change, the whole world indeed changed in the sixties. It was a cultural revolution, that we lived through, and has been played out in the history books ever since.
For me it is sad to look back on those times.........
But here we are in a different time, a different place, and a different war......... I can't help but wonder what will be said about this time, this place, and this war in the history books...........
It was indeed a strange little movie..........
