Trespass..... A book review.....

Trespass....... A book review.....

Trespass, written by Valarie Martin, is the story of two factitious families; the Dale's, and the Drago's..........

Brendan Dale is a college professor who is on a sabbatical from the university writing about the history of Fredrick of Hahenstaufen. His wife Chloe is an award wining illustrator who is working on a special edition of Wuthering Heights. They live in a beautiful up scale home in the country. Their son Toby has a small apartment in New York where he attends college but occasionally commutes back and forth to spend weekends with his parents. Life in the Dale family seems to be going well until Toby meets and falls in love with a Catholic Croatian girl, a bohemian of sorts. Chloe thinks of Salome as a "gold digger," an intrusion, and just wants her to go away. Salome is cool and indifferent. The two women clash and a smoldering battle ensues as each one trespasses uninvited into the other ones life. Things get more intense when Salome becomes pregnant and Toby marries her in a small ceremony in New York.......

Salome's family, the Drago's, come from the Balkans. Salome's mother is very unhappy with her living situation there. She has an affair with a Serbian neighbor which almost unheard off and extremely dangerous. Salome's father finds out about the affair just as the war breaks out. He flees to the United States with the children leaving his wife behind. He tells his daughter her mother is dead. When Salome finds out years later that her mother is still alive she goes in search of her.......

Salome's mother shares stories of the Serbian soldiers treatment of Croatian women, men, and children. One experiences the horrors of war through her eyes learning of the rape and pillage of communities, the murder of innocents, the imprisoning of women in rape camps, and the senseless, merciless, brutality of war where every day farmers and neighbors can potentially become war criminals......

A poacher is trespassing onto the Dale's land. Chloe warns him to stay away but he doesn't listen. She decides to take matters into her own hands and contacts the poachers place of employment......

In the story Wuthering Heights, that Chloe has been working with, Mr. Earnshaw returns from Liverpool with an orphan by the name of Heathcliff much to his families dismay......

The Iraq war is drawing closer. Toby and Salome have helped organize an anti war protest. On the day the protest occurs the police herd the protesters into a small crowded area so they cannot infiltrate certain city streets......

Though out the book Valerie Martin gives her readers insight into what could be termed trespass. Trespass can indeed mean many things to many different people. One can trespass on other people's rights, families, lands, country, culture, and religion. Each one of the characters in Trespass must make their own choices. Where is it acceptable for them to draw the line? Do they accept the changes in their life or do they run from them? Do they stay and fight or perhaps even embrace the intrusion or trespass?.......

I thought Trespass was an interesting and thought provoking book. I did find it to be a bit unsettling at times..........
